The Little Mermaid made a splash in theaters last year as Disney’s newest live action installment. Halle Bailey, singer and actress, also made a splash in the titular role of Ariel, the little mermaid. Halle spoke on representation in the world of Disney princesses, saying “We deserve to have representation where we can look and say, ‘She looks like me. Did you know? Malcolm X, prominent leader during the Civil Rights Moments, lived in and attended high school in Mason, MI. Malcolm X, along with his activism, had a way with words that helped him advocate for Black empowerment. Alex Haley, another writer famous for the 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family, sat with Malcolm to collaborate on an autobiography giving insight and context into the development of his philosophies and leadership, from childhood through the untimely end of his life. The book was released posthumously in 1965, nine months after his assignation.
